Star pitcher Greinke set to join Diamondbacks
Zack Greinke is signing on with the Arizona Diamondbacks. If Corbin can stay healthy, Robbie Ray turn in a full season like previous year, and Bradley develop at the big league level, then they will have a chance to compete. The Dodgers’ proposal was for five years and close to $160 million.
Los Angeles president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman released a statement Friday to wish Greinke’s family the best. Los Angeles will receive a supplemental first round pick as compensation. He strapped the money of this team and they will not forget it.
Mets GM Alderson has cancer • The New York Mets say general manager Sandy Alderson, 68, has cancer and will begin chemotherapy soon.
Greinke had social anxiety disorder issues in his past, but the right-hander is considered one of baseball’s brightest players and appeared very comfortable with the Dodgers. They could have spread it around to 2 more solid pitchers, such as Jeff Samardzija and Mike Leake and also added depth around the infield and outfield. Ian Kennedy (2.88 ERA in 2011) is the only Diamondbacks pitcher since 2004 who has qualified for the ERA title and posted an ERA below 3.00. In June, they traded pitcher Bronson Arroyo to Atlanta to further reduce their payroll. He is 6-2 with a 3.34 ERA in 10 career starts at Chase Field.
He had an Adjusted OPS+ of 195 during the 2015 season, which puts him in the company of Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron and Albert Belle, among others.
Something else to consider: Kershaw, Anderson, Wood and Ryu are all left-handed.
Right-hander Brandon McCarthy is expected back from reconstructive elbow surgery, but not until the middle of the season. Randy Johnson’s four-year, $52 million free agent sign in 1999 was a franchise record.
Despite Greinke posting the lowest ERA in the last 20 years at 1.66 this past season, Los Angeles management ultimately decided he wasn’t worth the extra $51 million it was going to take to keep him in Dodger blue.
The deal is reportedly for six years, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.
That doesn’t make the situation hopeless.
Cueto isn’t alone on the starting pitcher market.
But will that be enough to make up the loss of Greinke? Zack Greinke, who almost won the National League Cy Young Award this past season, gets his job done as a strikeout machine. He was 19-3 and pitched six or more innings in all 32 of his starts. Greinke had a scoreless streak of 45 2/3 innings this summer and was was durable, pitching 222 2/3 innings.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks have made themselves instant contenders.
Enter Greinke, who was by some measures the best pitcher in the major leagues in 2015 and is nonetheless one of the game’s true aces. Led by All-Stars Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock and rising young outfielders David Peralta and Ender Inciarte, the D-backs were second in the NL in runs, slugging percentage and total bases and third in OPS last season.
