US, other powers want end of UN Iran nuke probe
According to a July deal between Iran and the world powers, financial sanctions imposed by the West against Iran, its banking system and industry over Tehran’s nuclear program, are expected to be lifted in return for scaling down the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
Ali Shamkhani, the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, says the report released last week, while problematic, shows that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program.
This time, the resolution to be put forward for adoption by the board on December 15 specifies that “the board’s consideration” of the allegations will be closed because Iran met specific deadlines in cooperating with the IAEA for it to be able to wrap up its investigations by this month.
The draft resolution of the IAEA Board of Governors drawn up by the major powers – France, Britain, Germany, the United States, Russia and China – and sent to other states on Monday contained provisions that both sides could claim as victories.
Velayati also said Iran would try to ease tensions between Turkey and Russian Federation.
In response to a question whether he expects Iran will be satisfied with the resolution, he said, “It looks like it”.
Shamkhani does not detail what he believes is false in the report.
The IAEA has been given the role of verifying Iran’s commitments under the lasting nuclear deal and its report was a condition of the July nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers.
The report on the so-called PMD (possible military dimensions) in Iran’s nuclear program, which was released by Amano on Wednesday, confirmed that the agency has no credible indications of suspicious work in Tehran’s nuclear activities.
He said the recent IAEA report on Iran contains parts that testify to Iran’s non-divergence from peaceful nuclear activities.
