In the West Bank on Friday, a Palestinian stabbed and wounded an Israeli soldier and was then shot dead, and in a separate incident a Palestinian motorist was shot dead after injuring two soldiers in a ramming attack, the army said.

They frequently cite the lack of progress as a source of anger behind a string of attacks against Israelis that began in mid-September and shows no signs of ending.

The Shin Bet domestic security agency said arrests had been made in recent days of young men “suspected of belonging to a Jewish terror organisation and carrying out terror attacks”. He said the campaign would focus on Israel’s mild weather, its religious and historical sites as well as beaches and night life, and the large number of Russian-speaking immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

The army did not give details of the Israeli’s injuries but the country’s rescue service said he was in “moderate to severe” condition.

The soldiers fired dozens of gas bombs, many of which were fired directly into Palestinian homes where women and children had sheltered to escape the gas in the streets.
