No indication shooter was radicalized in Saudi Arabia
The father of Syed Farook, who with his wife shot dead 14 people in San Bernardino, California, says his son approved the ideas of the Islamic State group and was fixated with Israel, the Italian daily La Stampa reported Sunday.
“Two followers of Islamic State attacked several days ago a center in San Bernardino”, media reports quoted the ISIS broadcast as saying.
Malik and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, were killed in a shootout with police after a huge manhunt.
US officials have acknowledged that they had no information about the couple before the killing other than a routine request by Farook to grant Malik a visa so she could join him in the United States so they could marry.
Comments praising Isis were supposedly posted on a Facebook page established under an alias by Mailk around the time of the shooting, however it is uncertain whether these were posted by Malik herself or by someone with access to her account, Reuters reports.
“We know that ISIL and other terrorist groups are actively encouraging people – around the world and in our country – to commit awful acts of violence, oftentimes as lone-wolf actors”, the President said.
But FBI Director James Comey told reporters that the bureau’s investigation has not yet shown evidence that the couple were part of a larger group or members of a terror cell.
“The president will also discuss the broader threat of terrorism, including the nature of the threat, how it has evolved and how we will defeat it”, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement. He said he has not heard of any cases of them being radicalized and carrying out terrorist attacks.
Bowdich also said both subjects had been radicalized and had been for some time, but it’s unclear how long ago that occurred and by whom. “Because we know so little about Tashfeen Malik, it’s possible she might have been the main organizer in this event and talked her husband into doing it”. He said the suspects did not appear on the FBI’s “radar screen” before the shooting. Most of the sources the Times interviewed couldn’t say what Malik looked like, because she normally work a head scarf to cover her face.
Malik and Farook met online in 2013, and they got engaged in Saudi Arabia before traveling back to the US together in July 2014.
A maid who worked in the Multan home where Malik lived said Malik would travel back to Saudi Arabia to be with her family when school was out.
Malik was from the province of Punjab but had lived with her family in Saudi Arabia for many years before returning to Pakistan to study pharmacy. Following the gunbattle, authorities conducted overnight searches of the home that yielded more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition, 12 pipe-bomb-type devices and tools for making more of those explosives.
