Killers had been radicalized ‘for quite some time’
The FBI also believes that Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik had been radicalized for “quite some time”, David Bowdich, of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said Monday.
He also said the couple had taken target practice at ranges in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, with one session held within days of the rampage.
The couple were not under any kind of surveillance or being tracked in any way prior to the shootings that targeted a training and holiday party for Farook’s county Department of Public Health coworkers, investigators have said. Investigators were looking into the mass shooting as an “act of terrorism” after Farook’s wife allegedly pledged allegiance to the head of the “Islamic State” on Facebook. The couple died hours later in a shootout with police. She said today, “When we arrived, they were upbeat”.
“We were like, ‘What happened to Malik?'” said Rani.
The interior minister of Pakistan, where Malik attended college and Farook’s parents were born, also announced the country had launched its own inquiry.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Enrique Marquez was questioned by federal investigators over the weekend while they determine if he purchased two assault weapons used by Syed Rizwan Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik in the massacre at a social service center last Wednesday.
Authorities announced last week they were treating the investigation as an act of terrorism.
John Galletta, an instructor at Riverside Magnum Range, said in a statement that Farook had been there November 29 and 30, two days before the attack, and “nothing was out of the ordinary regarding his behavior”.
Though such warnings are common, this one was especially worrisome in the aftermath of the San Bernardino massacre and because the Iraqi government claimed it had offered a similar warning about an attack in Paris just a day before gunmen killed 130 people there.
He says both were radicalized and had been “for some time”.
The founder of an Islamic religious school organization whose former student helped carry out the California mass shooting says the group is non-political and has no links to extremists.
The limited salary of a county employee has aroused suspicion that the cache of weapons found in the couple’s Redlands apartment – including pipe bombs and ammunition – may have been purchased with funds from a foreign source, McCaul said.
The official close to the case said that the elder Farook came to the U.S.in 1972.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) – Thousands of employees of San Bernardino County began returning to work Monday, five days after a county restaurant inspector and his wife opened fire on a gathering of his co-workers. Security will be increased from level 1 to level 3 – which includes armed guards, officials said.
The update from the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the terror probe into the December 2 rampage in San Bernardino came after President Barack Obama vowed to destroy the Islamic State group and hunt down its followers, in an address to a jittery nation.
Employees in the environmental health division, where Farook and many of his victims worked, will be off until next week.
