Aunt: San Bernardino suspect ‘became more devout’
Malik and her American-born husband were killed in a shootout with police hours after they opened fire on a gathering of Farook’s colleagues last Wednesday.
Islamic State said on Saturday that a married couple who killed 14 people in California in an attack the FBI is investigating as an “act of terrorism” were followers of the militant group based in Syria and Iraq.
The FBI said it has evidence that both shooters, identified as Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27, participated in target practices at ranges across Los Angeles, including one days within of the shooting.
The Pakistani relatives of the female shooter involved in this week’s killing spree in California say she and her father seem to have abandoned the family’s Islamic traditions and become Takfiris during the time they spent in Saudi Arabia.
Police detailed the extent of the arsenal of a dozen pipe bomb-style devices and more than 4,500 rounds of ammunition that were found at the couple’s Redlands, California, home, as well as the 1,600 rounds they had in the rental auto they were driving during their face-off with police.
“It’s harder for us to understand, especially knowing that he was our brother and he was so happy with her”, said Ms Khan, referring to Malik.
The Islamic State group said in a broadcast Saturday on its official online radio service that the couple supported the militants’ effort to create an Islamic caliphate, or state, out of a large area of Syria and Iraq. “We are actively reviewing all of the information provided in the visa application and sharing it with our interagency partners as it relates to the investigation”, the State Department said.
But they said they had seen no warning that Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, were preparing for an assault that would leave 14 people dead and 21 injured.
“We’re going to have to start looking at people very closely because we can’t allow this to happen to our country”, Trump said.
“The investigation so far has developed indications of radicalization by the killers, and of potential inspiration by foreign terrorist organizations”, FBI Director James Comey said at a news conference on Friday, according to The New York Times.
Lawyers for Farook’s mother and three siblings described Malik as “just a housewife” who was quiet like her husband and strictly followed Muslim custom.
Malik was born and raised in Pakistan and moved to Saudi Arabia at age 19.
The post was made on an account with a different name, one US official said.
The FBI has said the man is not a suspect in shootings, though they want to question him. Farook senior lives there with older son, Syed Raheel Farook, who is a US Navy veteran.
