Rep. Jenkins calls President’s plan on terror “empty words”
After declaring that the attack on San Bernardino was an act of terrorism, President Obama said, “We will overcome it. We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us”.
NBC’s Chuck Todd previewed President Obama’s address to the nation on the threat from the Islamic State on Sunday night, saying the president should have given this speech after the Paris terror attacks.
Mr Obama condemned the December 2 attack in San Bernardino as “an act of terrorism created to kill innocent people”, but he cautioned against overreaction to the terrorism threat at home.
“We will prevail by being strong and smart”, he said, in comments directed at loud voices in American politics calling for more aggressive response. The shooters – a husband and wife who the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday said had been radicalized “for some time” – were killed later in a shootout with police.
Obama wants tech firms to work with law enforcement when the use of social media “crosses the line” from expressing views “into active terrorist plotting”, the official reportedly said.
Since the 9/11 attacks, Jihadist terrorists have killed 45 people in America compared to 48 by white supremacist terrorists, according to a research organization, New America.
“First, our military will continue to hunt down terrorist plotters in any country where it is necessary…Second we will continue to provide training and equipment to Iraqi and Syrian forces fighting ISIL on the ground”, Obama said.
Republicans have become increasingly critical of the president’s handling of Islamic State, or ISIS, arguing that his foreign policy has failed to address the risk from the militant group. The White House has been particularly concerned about the heated rhetoric from Republican presidential candidates about Muslims.
President Obama also pronounced what the US should not do.
Johnson would not comment on Trump’s remarks but urged Americans not to vilify Muslims or throw a “net of suspicion” over an entire community. “If Congress won’t make them illegal, we should not invest into companies that help put these deadly machines into the hands of killers”. “We can not turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam”. He says they represent a “tiny fraction” of the Muslim community. “They is a real problem Muslims must confront without excuse”. “We have a president who is completely overwhelmed”, said Florida Sen.
The president added that we must remember Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, as well as men and women in uniform willing to die in defense of our country. “That is how we will achieve a sustainable victory”, Obama said.
