Supergirl: Human for a Day Review
As Kara and James are walking along the streets of National City, an quake strikes, causing huge damages.
The liberties of doing a comic book series on television allow writers to switch up and change certain characters and stories for the sake of continuity or sometimes to just keep the audience guessing.
With ” a href=”http://www.moviefone.com/tv/supergirl/343367/main” Supergirl /a ” flying onto the CBS schedule on October 26 – not to mention Marvel’s ” a href=”http://www.moviefone.com/tv/marvels-jessica-jones/355531/main” Jessica Jones /a ” coming to Netflix next month – pundits are suggesting that the age of the TV superheroine has finally arrived. In fact, after David Harewood shares Hank’s truth and the truth about Alex’s father in a more poignant fashion than we’d been prepared for, the moment of truth becomes a much more landmark one than just revealing a shadowy villain. Even people who get very close to him nearly feel betrayed when they find out that he’s not who he says he is. That means she can get sick (for the first time ever) and finds out how the other half lives when she bumps into things and people and it hurts! If poor Sam only knew about his eldest daughter Lois and her relationship with Superman. Unbeknownst to her though is that one of the aliens that the DEO has been keeping in containment named Jemm, a hunter of some sort, has taken advantage of the natural disaster to break free.
Other parts of the episode are not quite so effective; James reveals a somewhat cheesy backstory about how his absent father inspired his love of photography. Weirdly enough, she’s the only person in Kara’s circle that doesn’t know her secret, yet she still gives the best advice.
“Mehcad Brooks, who plays Superman’s famous pal and Kara’s crush James “Jimmy” Olsen, expressed similar sentiments: “[Supergirl] is still the hero”, he said. Juggle two balls before you juggle three. She says their only hope is Kara. He was all, ‘I don’t like aliens, I don’t like Kara.’ It was all a bit too one-dimensional to me. There’s an explosion in the building a few floors above them.
Also, when Kara explained that her parents had died, Cat responded with compassion about Kara’s resiliency, but never pitied her assistant. They only have a three inhibitors so Henshaw and two agents go searching for Jemm. According to the official synopsis, “Kara goes toe-to-toe with Astra when her aunt challenges Kara’s beliefs about her mother”.
The B-story of this episode has the fun distinction of being really stupid (right up until the end) and an nearly direct rip of Aliens, only without Vasquez and Gorman being awesome and Paul Reiser getting what he deserves. Naturally suspicious, Alex defied Henshaw’s repeat commands to stay in lockdown, eventually turning a gun on her former boss, and handcuffing him to a pipe. How is any of this possible?
Did you all guess Hank’s secret? Also, as head of the DEO he’s trying to use that as an organization that protects mankind and protects good aliens. Hank revealed that he is a shape-shifter from planet Mars and he is called J’onn J’onzz, popularly known in the DC comics as Martian Manhunter.
There’s your big twist this week! (She was apparently unaware Winn existed until this moment.) James and Kara go check out Maxwell’s relief efforts.
The three of them band together to save people trapped on the floor above, and when Jimmy falls down an elevator shaft, Kara’s adrenaline kick-starts her powers once again. “It’s going to be a very emotional and powerful episode, and fans will be really delighted to see it”.
