Seattle police fatally shoot man following high-speed chase

The gunman continues onto a residential street, firing at officers, who swerve and slow down slightly.

Those officers will be placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. His name has not been released.

Today’s incident began around 12:30 PM when the suspect entered a downtown coffee shop armed with a handgun, leading employees to call police. He was on community custody, Washington’s version of probation, until November 7, according to the Department of Corrections. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was tracing the weapons, police said.

Due to his past criminal history, he was barred from legally possessing a handgun. Investigators said he drove north to Seattle’s Montlake neighborhood, where he stole another vehicle. The suspect died at the scene and two guns were found in his possession, according to the police report.

Apparently unsatisfied with the minivan, police say he pulled into a nearby gas station and tried to carjack a woman’s Mercedes at gunpoint. The dashcam video released by police Monday showed police cruisers chasing a black Camaro as it quickly twisted through the streets.
