Stone Temple Pilots bandmates say singer Scott Weiland was ‘gifted
The singer’s manager, Tom Vitorino, confirmed the death to The Associated Press early Friday morning.
Bloomington police said that detectives collected evidence from inside the bus that included “a small quantity” of cocaine “in the bedroom where Mr. Weiland was located”.
Weiland, a Grammy Award victor, was the lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, and Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts. Stone Temple Pilots released four more albums that each made it into major Top 10 charts, and spawned a number of notable hits.
TMZ reports that Tommy Black, the bassist of Scott Weiland and The Wildabouts, was arrested and booked for 5th degree felony possession of drugs.
Weiland, a father of two, and The Wildabouts were scheduled to perform a concert at the Medina Entertainment Center in Hamel, Minn. later Thursday.
“The story’s not finished”, Weiland told the AP at the time. The Stone Temple Pilots frontman had struggled with addiction, but had reportedly cleaned up his act in recent years. Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, “got me hooked, a wizardly mix of glam and post-punk, and I confessed to Scott, as well as the band many times, how wrong I’d been in assessing their native brilliance”. No underlying cause has yet been released, so it’s not known whether or not the cocaine found in the vicinity of Scott Weiland contributed to his death.
Police said Weiland was found dead in a bedroom on his tour bus in Bloomington, a city just south of Minneapolis. He released four solo albums throughout his lifetime as well – most recently “Blaster”, which surfaced in March of this year.
“I can’t deal with this right now”, she said, sobbing. He left the band to reunite with STP in 2008, going on a world tour, but his bandmates fired him in 2013, saying he was battling substance abuse.
But Weiland’s time in Velvet Revolver also ended in chaos.
He is survived by his wife Jamie Watchel and two children from his previous marriage to Mary Forsberg.
As stated by the Recording Academy of America, the organization that produces the Grammys, Weiland was a grunge icon with an extraordinary talent and captivating performances that will forever live on and inspire legions of rock fans worldwide.
