Eagles turning to running back by committee as Kelly manages Murray, Mathews

So to blame Murray entirely for his struggles isn’t very fair; even if Kelly ran some pistol formations it would have gone a long way to getting Murray on track.

According to an ESPN report from Ed Werder, Murray’s frustration reached a point where the running back felt it necessary to have a discussion with the only person within the organization who is more powerful than Chip Kelly. For the season, Murray has 163 carries for 569 yards and four touchdowns after a career year with Dallas last season in which he led the National Football League in rushing with 1,845 yards and had 13 touchdowns.

At New England, Murray was on the field for 14 of 61 offensive plays.

“He’s obviously upset about what happened”, a source told ESPN.com.

“DeMarco fits in the same way”, Kelly said.

It’s pretty unbelievable how quickly the relationship between Murray and Kelly has deteriorated after the Eagles spent $40 million – $18 million guaranteed – to sign the former Cowboys star. He’s apparently jumping right over the coach’s head to complain to the owner about the way he’s being used in the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense.

Kelly added that the running back rotation will be determined on a week-to-week basis.

The Eagles take on the Buffalo Bills at home this upcoming Sunday. Murray has had trouble making a significant impact for this team, but it is reported that he feels like he doesn’t know his true role with this offense.

“I want to play”, Mathews said.

The Eagles ran the ball 15 times in their last three possessions – seven by Sproles, six by Barner (including a critical fumble) and twice by Murray. Some games you get a handful more. With Sam Bradford as the team’s starting quarterback, a known pocket passer, the scheme becomes quite predictable, leaving Murray to be swallowed up by a herd of defensive linemen, according to NBC Sports.

“I think what you’ve got to look at is we won a football game the other night against a really fine opponent and he contributed in the game”, Shurmur said. There were multiple missed tackles and missed opportunities in the open field, and the Patriots are fortunate that few other teams offer a player in the make of Sproles (or Lewis).
