Zac Efron joins James Franco’s The Disaster Artist
“The Disaster Artist” doesn’t have an official release date yet, but best guess is that Upton will be tearing James Franco’s Wiseau apart on the big screen sometime in late 2016.
If you’ve been on the internet long enough, odds are you’ve come across a reference to either Tommy Wiseau or The Room – the film written by, directedy by and starred in by Tommy Wiseau.
Franco, who’s also directing, has shared an image from the set of the movie, titled The Disaster Artist, with him in full Wiseau costume and accompanied by his brother Dave Franco, who plays the actor who played Mark (oh hai), Greg Sestero.
Franco is both directing and starring in this one, chronicling Wiseau’s plans to make The Room, which became known as a famously cheesy misfire and is now revered as an unintentional comedy classic. The film will also star Seth Rogen, who is producing alongside his Point Grey Pictures partners Evan Goldberg, Vince Jolivette and Good Universe. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, Hannibal Buress and Andrew Santino have joined the cast. It’s far too early to tell if The Disaster Artist will be anything like that gem, but there are far worse films to model yourself after.
Tommy Wiseau will be involved in the film in one way or another. I will have opportunity to review it, but it’s up to them how they will be spinning. There’s no reason to think this won’t be a straight adaptation of the book, but, if we’ve learned anything over the past decade, it’s that very little of what Franco does could be called typical. If you haven’t seen the film, I suggest watching it on Rifftrax, since by itself it’s a touch film to get through all the way.
