Yankees land second baseman Starlin Castro from Chicago
The Yankees and Cubs are discussing a potential Starlin Castro deal at the Winter Meetings.
Multiple outlets are confirming that the Cubs have indeed sent Castro to NY, less than an hour after inking Ben Zobrist to a three-year contract. The righthanded hitter had been a shortstop much of his career before transitioning last season to second base, where he played 38 games. The former longtime member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays began 2015 with the Oakland Athletics before being traded to the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline.
The Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees could be making progress in their trade talks.
On Monday, it was reported that Zobrist had narrowed his decision down to four options – the Washington Nationals, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and a mystery team – and apparently that mystery team was the Cubs.
A player to be named later is also headed to Chicago in the deal.
Castro is projected by Steamer to hit.272/.313/.404 with 1.4 fWAR-if you believe the defensive evaluation.
The Cubs have gotten considerably better this offseason, with Zobrist and Warren joining John Lackey as Theo Epstein’s new additions. He will most likely slot in as the Yankees’ starting second baseman and join an infield headlined by Chase Headley, Didi Gregorious, and Mark Teixeira.
The Yankees have a second baseman.
Rookie Rob Refsnyder and Dustin Ackley are now set to platoon at second base for the Yankees, though general manager Brian Cashman has said he’d consider upgrading at the position.
