Ant-Man star Paul Rudd talks about the Clueless musical and filming
Still, this is the first no-doubt-about-it reference to our own friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The links and Easter eggs are there for super fans to giggle over, and with the inevitable sequel and further movie appearances notwithstanding, “Ant-Man” might be the superhero movie for people who are sick of them, or perhaps a re-entry point for those who have exhausted of all the spectacle and just want a nice, clean story and a hearty laugh.
On my rating scale, “Ant-Man” earns a home run.
The first credits scene shows Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) leading his daughter into a secret room that contains his wife’s suit, which is clearly the outfit of the Wasp. That was always a part of the movie. Not only is the venerable 91-year-old known as one of the creative minds behind several well-known superheroes like Spider-Man, X-Men or Ant-Man, but he’s also appeared in several of those films. It was important to me and the movie to have Hope’s arc be every bit as important as Scott Lang’s arc in the movie. From the beginning, she’s got some real issues with ther father that need to be dealt with. She’ll join Black Widow and Gamora as the number of female heroes on-screen continues to grow.
Ant-Man hits theaters Friday. With all of the success the studio has enjoyed over the past decade, they have a big miss on their hands with Ant-Man. As the world around us is very big from the perspective of an ant, there are a lot of really fun things you can do with it and Marvel really brought it all out on the table.
Editor’s Note: Disney never invited me to a screening, so I still haven’t seen the movie yet. [Laughs] That to me would be a bad kind of tease. Tell us about it!
“I was wearing a T-shirt with myself on it”, Rudd said when asked if his “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” character was as nerdy as Carell’s. He didn’t care about the general reaction because Rudd’s certain the team at Marvel Comics like to go against the norm with casting.
Combined with action that shifts the usual Marvel macro battle to micro dazzle, a solid cast and a high-tech heist of a plot, Ant-Man delivers a good thing in a small package.
What I’d Pay to See: Both. “Our movie is a more intimate movie by design”. This creates (gasp) a civil war. There’s even quite a few tie-ins to the other Marvel Comic Universe films, but I don’t want to spoil anything for this one. His hero is realistic, his physique reflects his the skills needed for his ill chosen career. And then that second tag sort of gives a slight [bit of] more information about the situation that Captain America and Falcon find themselves in.
