Watch ‘El Chapo’ Sneak Out of His Cell
Mexico’s government has released a video showing the moment fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman entered his prison cell’s shower before escaping.
In the moments before the escape last weekend the Sinaloa cartel leader could be seen in grainy footage pacing the cell and checking behind a waist-high partition wall next to the shower. It was also equipped with a modified motorcycle, mounted on tracks, perhaps to expedite his escape.
Mexican troops were deployed Wednesday in the municipality of Badiraguato, including roads leading to “La Tuna”, the birth place of drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman as part of an operation to re-capture him.
As authorities hunted Monday for any sign of Mexico’s most powerful drug lord, it was clear that Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s escape must have involved inside help on a grand scale.
Tunnellers working for the Sinaloa cartel boss reportedly spent almost a year boring through rock into Mexico’s most security jail prison from house on a construction site about a mile away. The air quality may have even tested by a bird, nicknamed “El Chapito,” which was found in Guzman’s cell wastebasket; the bird also could have been a symbol for El Chapo to escape.
Underneath the shower is the hole where the tunnel starts, but it’s so deep and dark you can’t really see anything.
Mexican investigators have pieced together how the convicted drug kingpin made his way to freedom. Since 2006, at least 50 narcocorridos musicians have been shot in Mexico and performances by some narcocorridos performers have been banned in parts of Mexico, including in Tijuana.
Seven more strides and the man who Mexico’s government said could not possibly repeat his 2001 prison escape stepped through a sliding steel door into the chilly night on a high plain west of the capital.
He had lights that would have led all the way down through that tunnel powered by this generator here.
He also threatened U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump who said the drug baron’s escape revealed how corrupt officials were in Mexico.
While the video released late Tuesday shows Guzman walking back and forth three times before crouching into the shower with his prison garb on, National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said it was normal behavior for prison inmates.
Saturday was the second time Guzman managed to escape from a maximum-security jail.
“El Chapo Guzman will die free”, said Mr. Vasquez, The Telegraph reported.
The whole escape route would normally take about 18 months to complete, Jim Dinkins, former head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, told the Associated Press. Osorio Chong said he’s already fired the prison director and other prison officials.
