Air Force: 2 Afghan trainees missing from Georgia air base
The men didn’t report Monday to maintenance training with the 81st Fighter Squadron, base officials said in a statement Tuesday night.
Matthew Clayton of the 81st Fighter Squadron flies an A-29 Super Tucano over Moody Air Force Base, Ga.
Federal, local and state agencies are working with the military to find the men, Childress said Wednesday.
The trainees have been stationed at Moody Air Force Base (AFB) since February.
They are among nine pilots and 14 maintenance crew who have been at Moody Air Force Base for much of the year. Officials say two male Afghan nationals being trained at an Air Force base in Georgia have gone missing.
Air Force and Defense officials noted “there’s no reason to believe either of the two pose any kind of threat”. A soldier in the Afghanistan army went missing during a training exercise at a military base in MA past year. They were found and detained a day later trying to cross the border into Canada.
The missing pair were screened before they arrived at the Air Force Base in February, officials told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
“The students have trained alongside American counterparts for the entirety of 2015 and do not pose any apparent threat”, a statement from the base said.
They were scheduled to graduate from the program next week with the rest of their class and, after a short break, return to Afghanistan.
