Browns pick Austin Davis over Johnny Manziel to face Bengals

The Browns have only 16 sacks this season, and seven of those were recorded against the Tennessee Titans in the second game. Josh McCown joins him for that dubious honor during the loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. McCown fractured his collarbone, during the fourth quarter of the Brown’s 33-27 loss.

The Browns also officially signed wide receiver Terrelle Pryor on Wednesday.

Davis will become the 24th quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999. But it’s a done deal. Manziel, the 22nd overall pick in last year’s draft, partied during the brief vacation, then lied to the Browns after a video showing him singing, dancing and holding a large bottle at a nightclub appeared online. Would Pettine go with Manziel or Davis?

It may not happen, but it wouldn’t be the worst move for the Browns. For the sake of the Browns’ immediate and long-term plans, it really shouldn’t have been much of a decision.

“I talked to the quarterbacks this morning, and I said, given where we are, what our circumstances are, it’s safe to say now that this is a weekly thing”, Pettine said. They may have gotten their wish. McCown missed three games and parts of three others with injuries this season, his first with the Browns.

This left the Browns with Josh McCown under center once again – until he went down in the second half with injury. He had driven the Browns into position to win the game before the Ravens blocked a field goal attempt and ran it back for a touchdown.

“I was desperate and frustrated at the same time”, Hill said. I’ll discuss it more to determine our best course of action moving forward. “There have certainly been mistakes made and a lot of learning experiences, but at the same time we feel pretty good about the production that we have gotten from that room”.

After the contest, Pettine added he was impressed with how Davis looked. “It’s more about Austin and seeing what he can do than necessarily about length of punishment”.

On that drive, Davis was 6-6 for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Pettine added he’ll make the final decision on how to proceed at quarterback, not the front office. It keeps the defensive coordinators on their toes.

“I hate feeling unprepared for anything, especially being quarterback on an NFL football team”. “A guy who’s played in the league”.

The Browns may give the luck of the draw to Manziel. Otherwise he might be starting against the Bengals.
