Tigers land reliever Wilson from Yankees
The Tigers have been searching for a left-handed reliever to fill out the rest of their bullpen, and the Yankees’ Justin Wilson could be that player. “We have some guys in the rotation that obviously have issues”. Lowe was dominant with a 1.96 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 61-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 55.0 innings in 2015 with the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays. He was dealt from the Mets to Detroit in the July trade that brought outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to NY.
Green, 24, is ranked as the 23rd-best prospect in Detroit’s system by MLB.com and posted a 3.93 ERA in 27 starts at Double-A Erie last season. That said, the Yankees are very deep in left-handed relievers and pretty thin on Triple-A rotation options to provide immediate depth.
“They have big arms”, Cashman said.
Like Warren, Wilson is eligible for salary arbitration.
Justin Wilson was acquired last off season from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for backup catcher Francisco Cervelli.
Tigers general manager and vice president of baseball operations Al Avila was scheduled to speak with reporters at 5 p.m. (EST) Wednesday, but his availability was pushed back indefinitely less than an hour before that.
Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com praised the trade from Detroit’s perspective, saying, “In Wilson, the Tigers will receive the lefty setup man they’ve been seeking and do so at what should be an affordable rate”.
The prospects have not been announced of yet but Brian Cashman about an hour ago mentioned his former left-hander when he said there was interest in Brett Gardner, Andrew Miller and Wilson. Even though he had an effective season, middle relievers do not tend to ever get much arbitration money.
Cashman said the deal had more to do with adding starting pitching depth than anything else, mentioning lefties Chasen Shreve, Jacob Lindgren and James Pazos as options for the Yankees’ bullpen.
