Accused Planned Parenthood Gunman Says He’s Guilty
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs police Officer Garrett Swasey was shot and killed while responding to the incident.
The Nov. 27 killing spree left three dead, all of them parents, and nine injured.
After that hearing, Dan May, the district attorney for Colorado’s 4th Judicial District, declined to say whether he would seek the death penalty, and said that he had “been in discussion” with federal officials about the possibility of federal charges. “And he wants to do that to me”.
“I am guilty. There will be no trial”.
At one point, a bailiff placed a hand on Dear’s shoulder in an apparent attempt to quiet him. “Could you add that to the list?”
Dear also claimed King “drugged” Holmes and that “he wants to do that to me”. He could get life in prison or be put to death if convicted.
The lone suspect has since been held without bond in the El Paso County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. The closely watched case has already united even staunch opponents in the abortion debate.
Planned Parenthood leaders said they believed the attack was motivated by Dear’s anti-abortion views, but officials said they would not discuss his motives while the investigation was ongoing.
“Not normal” may not sound like the most compelling argument or mode of analysis but it is when the ever-present threat of violence against the largest single provider of reproductive health services in the U.S.is so thoroughly normalized.
Later, he accused his attorneys of being in “cahoots” with Planned Parenthood to “shut me up”.
We can’t let domestic terrorists win.
Dear surrendered after a almost six-hour standoff.
Dear is reported to have told law enforcement officers at the scene of the crime, “No more baby parts”, an apparent reference to political attacks accusing Planned Parenthood of illegally selling fetal tissue.
Since the shooting, a massive debate has ensued over any bearing it may have on the abortion debate. The issue began July 14 with the release of a video showing Dr. Deborah Nucatola, a senior director for Planned Parenthood, discussing how the organization harvests fetus organs after an abortion. He was not scheduled to formally enter a plea during the day’s proceedings.
In 2002, Dear was charged with being a peeping Tom; those counts were dismissed. He owns property in Swannanoa and Black Mountain and has spent time in Western North Carolina.
