SAG Awards 2016: ‘Trumbo,’ ‘Beasts of No Nation,’ ‘Straight Outta Compton
Thirteen coveted awards will be handed out to film and TV actors.
The annual SAG awards, which honor the year’s top achievements in film and television, are chosen by more than 100,000 actors. The ceremony airs live from Los Angeles on TNT and TBS at 8 ET/5 PT Jan. 30.
The nominees for actors in film and television are numerous, with categories such as outstanding performance by a male/female actor in a leading role, outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, outstanding performance by a male/female actor in a comedy series and outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.
Other British nominations for the American awards including Eddie Redmayne who has been given a Best Actor nod for the Forthcoming The Danish Girl.
The biggest surprises were Mirren’s second nomination as best actress for the poorly received (but heavily campaigned) “Woman in Gold” and an even more WTF best actress nod for Sarah Silverman in the little-seen “I Smile Back”.
Up for supporting actress in a motion picture are Mirren for Trumbo, Rooney Mara (Carol), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs).
He is nominated alongside two more Brits – Mark Rylance in Bridge of Spies and Christian Bale for The Big Short, alongside Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and nine-year-old Jacob Tremblay for Room.
Downton Abbey, which has been hugely successful in the United States, was nominated for best drama ensemble, while Dame Maggie Smith was nominated for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for her portrayal of the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
The SAG nominations were announced 24 hours before the Golden Globe nominees are set to be revealed, by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Aside from “Spotlight” this season’s main players should come further into focus on Thursday when the nominees are announced for the Golden Globe Awards.
The nominations were spread fairly evenly among films up for outstanding performance by a cast – the SAG Awards’ equivalent of Oscar’s best picture – with “Trumbo” earning three nods and “Spotlight”, “The Big Short” and “Beasts of No Nation” picking up two each.
In television, Sofia Vergara’s “Modern Family” will try to beat out “The Big Bang Theory”, “Key & Peele”, “Orange is the New Black”, “Transparent” and “Veep” as the best comedic ensemble.
