We can win anywhere, says fired-up Arsenal boss Wenger
Wenger, however, says the challenge holds no fear for his players and believes nerves could prove an issue for the Greeks.
The victory completed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for Arsenal who lost three of their first four games of the campaign.
With Arsenal leading 3-0 after 67 minutes, Olympiakos’ chances of completing a comeback looked very slim, and the Gunners’ spot in the knockout stages all but secure.
Arsene Wenger’s side travel to Greece, where they will face Olympiacos on Wednesday, sitting third in Group F, three points behind their midweek opponents, who occupy second place.
While there has been frustration for Arsenal in bowing out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 for the past five seasons, an exit on Wednesday would mean Wenger failing to lead his side past the first group stage for the first time in 16 years.
“Mentally you prepare yourselves to adapt to every situation”, he added. “I know there’s more to come and now we are just focused on the game on Wednesday because it’s a really important one for us”.
“If you fall down then you respond, if you want to have a chance to get across you have to give absolutely everything to get over it”. I know that there will be a very good atmosphere, the fans are insane and they really support their team right through the full 90 minutes.
“Ideally you would like not to have to be patient, but we might need to be”.
After suffering a shock 3-2 home defeat to Olympiacos in September, Arsenal have it all to do to if they are to turn around the group and so avoid dropping into the Europa League. For that to happen, Arsenal need their remaining key players – especially Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud – to rise to the occasion.
“Overall if you look at the numbers since the start of the Champions League group stage, we have played with 10 men in Zagreb, we scored an own goal at home to Olympiacos”.
“That’s sure, we have a lot of injuries”. Aaron Ramsey will again be paired with Mathieu Flamini in central midfield while Theo Walcott is expected only to be a substitute following a month out with a hamstring injury.
Ramsey has received plenty of praise for his influence over the game, but mostly the feeling among most analysing the game is that Sunderland performed well in the game.
“I’ve been playing for a long time, I’ve been in the game for a long time, ever since I was young”, he told the club’s official website.
