LSU’s Leonard Fournette Not A Heisman Finalist
Henry led the nation in rushing (1,986) and scored 23 touchdowns despite playing in an offense with an inconsistent passing attack. But, he’s not done there, as he also returns kicks for the Cardinal adding another 1,042 yards on 36 kick returns and a touchdown to boot as well as 14 punt returns for 67 yards. He stands as the lone quarterback with at least 3,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards.
What a difference three weeks can make.
In Stanford’s recent run of success, they have two other Heisman candidates that finished runner-up for the award with Toby Gerhart placing second behind Mark Ingram in 2009 and Andrew Luck sitting second to both Newton (2010) and Griffin III (2011). He still only averaged 4.3 yards a carry for the game, but he moved the chains a lot even though Florida knew exactly what was coming.
One of the main goals in the game, Henry said, was to win the Heisman Trophy with that virtual, created version of himself.
Watson has guided Clemson to a 13-0 record this season and is 17-1 as the Tigers’ starter over the last two seasons.
The victor of the Heisman Trophy will be announced on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Best Buy Theater in NY.
But then last weekend happened. “All the success I’ve had, I credit my teammates and coaches and God, because I couldn’t do it without them”.
“Are you the Heisman trophy victor?” Even more impressive was his ability to do so as part of a rushing attack that was ravaged by injuries at fullback and on the offensive line. He has recorded 11 or more victories four times.
Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey runs for a first down against Cal in the first quarter of the Big Game at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015. The following week, though, he rushed for just 91 yards in a loss to Arkansas.
He was named Most Outstanding Player at the team banquet Sunday night and a permanent team captain.
“You win the Heisman in November, got to win 10 games”, Dennis Dodd, CBSSports.com’s national college football reporter, said earlier this year. Yet his TD-to-interception is 30 to 11, the latter an extremely high number for a potential Heisman victor.
The best player on the best team, but not the player who had the best year nor the best player. He became Stanford’s fourth finalist in the past seven seasons.
Ervin’s output over 12 games was tremendous, but he would have needed to play five more games to match Christian McCaffrey’s 2015 all-purpose yardage.
The Heisman Trophy race will come down to a choice among a player who does one thing extraordinarily well and two other players who are exceptional in multiple ways.
It would have been nice for Fournette to be recognized among his peers as one of the best college football players in the country, which he undoubtedly was this year.
