Syrian Refugees Arrive in Texas
Pence says he’s “disappointed” by Catholic Charities’ decision to bring the family to Indiana.
“I will continue to do everything that I can to ensure that refugees from Syria who pose a danger to the people of the state of Texas will not be allowed to relocate into the state of Texas”, Abbott told reporters. He’ll help welcome the new family of Syrian refugees to Dallas along with Muhammad Rahimi, a former US military interpreter from Afghanistan.

Carrigan declined to identify where the family was living due to safety concerns.

Six other Syrian refugees were settled in Dallas by a different organization on Monday.

The state’s failed move comes less than a week after Texas withdrew its first request for a temporary restraining order to block the arrival of two Syrian families – 12 individuals including 6 children – that arrived in Houston and Dallas on Monday.
Tobin says he considered Pence’s request but made a decision to help the family settle in IN because such assistance is an “essential part” of the Catholic church’s identity.
In mid-November Indiana Gov. Mike Pence suspended state agencies’ involvement in the relocation of Syrian refugees following terrorist attacks that killed more than 120 people in Paris Nov. 19.
Pence, who said he hoped residents would welcome the new family to IN, despite his misgivings about the vetting process, rebuked Trump on Twitter Tuesday, saying calls to ban Muslims “are offensive and unconstitutional”.
But Pence indicated he wouldn’t try to deny Medicaid, food stamps or other social services to any refugees who do arrive in Indiana.
US diplomats, meanwhile, are still processing resettlement applicants in Istanbul and Amman, Jordan, and have plans to begin the process in the Iraqi city of Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdish region.
The archdiocese of IN is resettling a Syrian refugee family IN the state despite the governor’s opposition.
“The IRC has been working here in Texas for the last 40 years and we have had a really strong relationship with all levels of the state and local government, so we are focused on our work and we are letting the lawsuit run its course”, she said. But it also fought harder than any other state to stop the inflow of Syrian refugees after the attacks.
Germany has pledged to resettle 38,500 Syrian refugees from across the region, and Britain promised to take 20,000 Syrians by 2020; together, these two countries make up the vast majority of the pledges offered by European countries.
