Lindsey Vonn wins super-G for Lake Louise hat trick
In early December 2009, he won on the slopes Birds of Prey in American Beavercreek within three days three times in three different disciplines. On Saturday, she was a full second ahead of anyone else for victory number two. I love the speed.
“Hat tricks are very hard to do”. I was so confident in all disciplines. Sergei Belski, USA TODAY Sports Lindsey Vonn reacts after her run during the women’s downhill race in the FIS alpine skiing World Cup at Lake Louise Ski Resort. “I feel like there were some people that doubted whether I could win today”. I feel like I’ve got that trick up my sleeve.
Her time of one minute 50.43 seconds was almost a tenth of a second faster than her winning time Friday.
Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., was the top Canadian, finishing seventh.
The highlights (and lowlights) since 2012 include finalizing her divorce from Thomas Vonn, dating Tiger Woods, tearing up her right knee (twice), sitting out the 2014 Sochi Olympics splitting up with Woods and becoming the most decorated female skier of all-time by breaking the record of 62 World Cup victories held for decades by Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proll.
Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who swept the men’s downhill and super-G in Lake Louise last weekend, won Friday’s downhill in Beaver Creek, Colo.
Vonn seems to be making history every time she crosses the finish line.
With Austria’s Anna Fenninger and Slovenia’s Tina Maze not racing this season, the 20-year-old Shiffrin will be one of Vonn’s challengers for a fifth overall crown.
The women race super-G on Sunday.
“It was so fun”.
“I’m really excited to see what World Cup speed is all about”, Shiffrin said. “I did a lot of things well, but I did a pretty crucial section in too conservative a way I think”.
She also witnessed how dominant Vonn can be in Lake Louise. “In the back of my head I was thinking, ‘I’ll get points, but maybe a top 15.’ So, by holding in 15th, that’s a really good day”. Emmanuel Dunnand, Getty Images Vonn makes a training run down a Super-G course November 29, 2013, in Vail, Colo. “She knows how to carry her speed”.
Sunny skies, foreboding clouds, low visibility – no matter the conditions, Vonn simply proved in a different league than the rest of the field.
“My stepmom wrote me yesterday saying, ‘Sixty-nine is great, but I like round numbers so could you please just make it to 70?’ previous year I had 60 here, so it’s kind of nice”, said Vonn.
“I’m sure she’s going to be a strong competitor here in the next couple races”.
