Chicago Mayor Apologizes For Police Killing Of Black Teenager
“I take responsibility for what happened because it happened on my watch”, said Mr Emanuel. But interim police superintendent John Escalante said Monday that the matter is under investigation and that the department would be “doing our own review of our policies and practices surrounding the response to mental health crises”.
Alderman Will Burns of Chicago’s Fourth Ward joins Thomas Roberts to discuss whether Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s apology will be enough to calms calls for his resignation in the wake of various controversies related to his city’s police department. Evans is an African-American officer who’s been with the Chicago police 29 years.
Before protesters weaved through downtown, retired schoolteacher Audrey Davis held a sign that read, “Mayor Emanuel is morally corrupt!” Critics say he’ll have an uphill battle. Emanuel referred to a “code of silence”.
“We have a trust problem”, he said.
High-profile killings of black men by mainly white police officers in US cities have prompted a national debate and protests about the use of excessive force by police.
Chicago police already have a questionable reputation. City lawyers say its release will make a fair trial hard.
Numerous protesters appeared to be in their early 20s. “Rahm’s got to go”, and “No more killer cops”. The Cook County state’s attorney office has said it saw the authority report and chose not to pursue charges. When they went by the famed Tavern on Rush, the wait staff peered out windows giving thumbs up and snapping photographs.

“Your speech touched me because of what happened to me trying to come to work today to do my job”, she told the mayor.
The video of the shooting was kept from the public for more than a year and only ordered to be released by a judge in November. In the eight years between Daleys, six people served as mayor, mostly in acting or interim capacities.
Prosecutors also released footage Monday of a Chicago officer fatally shooting Ronald Johnson, who was 25 and black, in 2014.
Chicago officials are asking for another investigation into the 2014 shooting death of a black teenager by a white police officer, a video of which was released last month and sparked several protests.
Court filings allege that the IPRA cleared the officer only after an investigator who opposed that finding, Lorenzo Davis, was fired.
“(His) new take is that he wants transparency, he wants change”, Brian Coffman said. He was even more definitive and emphatic talking about McDonald’s death, which he called “totally avoidable”. Van Dyke is charged with first-degree murder. And our good mayor appoints the police board. At one point, a fight broke out. “It is a whole other thing to build friendships and relationships, which are integral to fighting crime”. “That’s unacceptable”, Emanuel said, later adding that “no citizen is a second-class citizen in the city of Chicago“. One of them was called “Shut Down City Council”.
Many are calling for the mayor’s resignation amid allegations of extreme police misconduct and an administration coverup.
