Manchester United reporter Stuart Mathieson at the Manchester Evening News has also acted quickly to play down the rumours, saying that no bid has been made by the club.

The Mancunian publication is not mincing words about the Sport1 report that Louis Van Gaal was after Muller as the final piece of the puzzle.

Muller would be an outstanding addition to any side in the world but it’s hard to see why Bayern Munich would agree to sell him, even with an offer as big as €100m.

The bid, if real, would have shattered Man United’s previous record bid for Angel Di Maria last summer.

The 25-year-old has scored 71 goals from 197 appearances for Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga champions repeatedly outlined their desire to keep one of the club’s best players.

Thomas Muller has been the model of consistency over the last three seasons.

If United were to become successful in capturing Muller, it would see him joining fellow Germany global and former Bayern Munich teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, who moved to Old Trafford this month.
