Wayne Rooney to play for Everton in Duncan Ferguson testimonial
Wayne Rooney will wear the blue shirt of Everton again after agreeing to appear in Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial. The Manchester United and England star has agreed to make an appearance in the game at Goodison Park and is happy to have the chance to repay the former striker, to whom he feels he owes a debt for guidance early in his career.
The 29 year old hasn’t exactly been welcomed back with open arms since his controversial departure.
However, it seems as though nothing would stop Rooney from missing Ferguson’s testimonial.
“When I broke into the first team he helped and looked after me”. Ferguson had three spells at the club, the first on loan.
“Had he not asked me to play I would have gone and supported him on the day as I’m sure most Evertonians will”, Rooney added.
I had forgotten, but this was the famous Italian referee’s last match; he resigned after it. He did say that at the time, he called a foul on Darren Bent, not Ferguson, but Everton fans seem convinced there was a “plot” to keep five English sides out of the CL, or something like that.
‘Everybody knows that we go way back.
“Wayne’s a world-class player and I’m genuinely thrilled that he will play on the day”.
But Rooney has never hidden his love for the Blues, dressing his son Kai up in Everton strips, and in recent seasons the attitude of Everton fans has notably softened towards him.
The game will be played just six days before United’s opening game of the Premier League season, on August 8th against Spurs.
