Yulee’s Derrick Henry named one of three Heisman Trophy finalists
Stanford standout running back Christian McCaffrey’s stellar season has earned him a trip to NY as one of three finalists for the Heisman Trophy alongside Alabama tailback Derrick Henry, and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
He had 189 yards and a touchdown in the SEC Championship Game, a 29-15 win over Florida. Like McCaffrey, he broke a hallowed record this fall: the SEC single-season rushing record held by Herschel Walker.
Watson led Clemson to an undefeated regular season and a No. 1 ranking.
For the season, Watson has 3512 passing yards with 30 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He sat out last season after transferring to Oklahoma, where he has thrown for an average of 282.4 yards per game this season while completing 68.6 percent of his passes. I’ve always looked at the Heisman victor as a borderline renaissance athlete, and that guy in 2015 has been Stanford’s do-everything sophomore playmaker. In Alabama’s last two victories against Auburn and Florida in the SEC title game, Henry ran for 460 yards on 90 carries. Watson is a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Watson gives the Tigers an edge that no one else in college football has the best player in the country. He had 1,847 yards and eight touchdowns rushing, 540 yards and four touchdowns receiving and 1,042 yards on kickoff returns.
Miles says not winning the Heisman or finishing as a Heisman finalist will likely motivate Fournette to have an even better year next season. College football fans will be holding their collective breaths Saturday night as the victor of sports’ most recognizable trophy is announced.
Now quarterback Deshaun Watson is on the popular magazine’s cover for the second time in less than a month.
The vote is also expected to close, whereas the past few winners were decided by large margins, and Stanford will hope to get a bit of revenge against Alabama.
The votes have not been cast, but Vegas has declared the Heisman race over.
On Saturday, McCaffrey had 461 all-purpose yards in a 41-22 win over USC in the Pac-12 championship game.
The Heisman selection show is certainly a gaudy, exasperating affair for viewers, but it means the world to the players selected to attend.
Henry led the nation in rushing (1,986) and scored 23 touchdowns despite playing in an offense with an inconsistent passing attack.
Saban said he hasnt coached many players that actually set a better example to affect other people..
Come to think of it, couldn’t we have two winners this year?
McCaffrey might have half the touchdowns of Henry, but he had more yards from scrimmage (2,387 to 2,083) on only 11 more touches, against a comparable schedule, and with less help around him.
