President Obama said Muslim-Americans are our sports heroes; here are some
What tone would he take?
Troutman is an advocate for gun control. Democrats (27%) are the most likely to have a favorable opinion of Islam, but even they tend to say that they view Islam negatively.
Why? I can not remember American Muslims feeling so anxious, unsettled, or scared for their future.
“Let’s not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear”, President Obama said.
There was also no discussion of renewing domestic intelligence gathering tools that have lapsed, arguably making it more hard to identify and track would-be terrorists on American soil. Muslim-American scholars present the new book as both a “rebuttal to terrorists” and an opportunity to educate non-Muslims about their religion, according to CNN.
In April, a former candidate for U.S. Congress from Tennessee, Robert Doggart, was arrested for plotting to attack a Muslim community with guns, bombs, even a machete.
The leading Republican presidential contender, billionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump, told CBS’s Face the Nation that he would be open to racial profiling and investigating the families suspected of terrorism. However, the group has set its sights elsewhere in the world, launching attacks in Lebanon and Turkey and downing a Russian Federation airliner over Egypt. This week has seen a massacre in San Bernardino, by a married couple who at least claimed ISIS affiliation, and attempted murder on the London metro by a knife wielding man who reportedly shouted “this is for Syria”. “Our people want a little less elite sermonizing about tolerance in our communities, and a little more articulation of our shared Constitutional principles – and a lot more articulating of an actual battle plan”.
But the very words that Obama preached yesterday about loving our fellow Americans and recognizing Muslims’ humanity is exactly what I needed to hear when I saw Ferguson and Baltimore become torn apart by protests and vandals.
On American pluralism and democracy, he spoke forcefully: “Muslim-Americans are our friends and our neighbors, our co-workers, our sports heroes – and, yes, they are our men and women in uniform who are willing to die in defense of our country”.
Obama admits that ISIS “can’t defeat us on the battlefield“, but he refuses to bring that fight to them because it wouldn’t produce a “more sustainable victory”. He’s right about that. He also urged Congress to pass new force authorization for military actions underway against IS in Iraq and Syria, and also to approve legislation to bar guns from being sold to people on a no-fly list. He notably called on Muslim leaders to confront extremist ideology “without excuse”. There has been a continuing mismatch between the president’s goal of destroying ISIL and the means he has committed.
Last night’s address showed that we are going to continue employing the same failed strategy rather than re-evaluating and developing a new one.
Meddling with visa applications that have been used to support our cultural values on family and strengthened our ties with our allies, without strengthening our national security is not assuring.
To nobody’s surprise, Obama’s speech was pilloried by GOP presidential candidates and his Republican critics in Congress. But it’s not like they’re offering any brilliant or guaranteed solutions.
Obama’s speech, to be fair, had some strong points. Obama has tried countless times to combat this, but to no avail. “They know they can’t defeat us on the battlefield… but they also know that if we occupy foreign lands, they can maintain insurgencies for years”.
Obama recently dismissed ISIL as “a bunch of killers with good social media”, but these killers’ ability to conduct outreach to potential recruits through the Internet is their key force multiplier. At the same time, he pleaded with Americans to avoid targeting or denigrating Muslims.
“We need to be understanding that we’re all in this together as Americans”, added Senator Cory Booker.
The first being an online offensive launched against ISIS she said going on the defensive securing our own networks is not enough. “We need them to act against terrorism”.
“Asking Muslims to do this is offensive”. Obama asked Muslims to “root out misguided ideas”, though there are already many such efforts.
“Here’s what I want you to know”, he said. “And therefore, Muslims have a responsibility to come join ISIL and to fight in that war”. That is what it feels like to be an American Muslim these days. “So far, we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas, or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home”. Why should we render ourselves defenseless when lives could be saved?
“We will utterly destroy ISIS”, Cruz said during a campaign stop in Iowa.
