Sailor dies after injuries in Chattanooga shooting
“He was at the recruiting center and he was shot three times”, said Proxmire, who said she learned of the shooting from a voicemail from a friend.
“It is a heartbreaking circumstance for these individuals who have served our country with great valor to be killed in this fashion”, President Obama said on Thursday.
Smith, a logistics specialist, was shot in the liver, colon and stomach, according to an interview given by his grandmother, Linda Wallace, earlier in the week.
Smith was a sailor and was serving in Chattanooga at the time of the shooting. Proxmire said he had accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Defiance College but injured his shoulder and chose to enlist in the Navy afterward.
The college said he attended for one semester in the fall of 2007.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Smith and his wife and children at gofundme.com/chattanoogatn, which will be used to support medical, transportation, housing and needs of the family, it said.
On Memorial Day, he posted a photo of a young mother and child embracing next to the distinctive rounded gravestone of a fallen service member in Arlington National Cemetery. “In case you thought it was about a 3 day weekend, parties or the beach”.
“When my aunt called me, she said: ‘Pray, ‘ because they called Randall’s wife and said: ‘Bring your pastor.'”.
