Local man dead after Chattanooga shooting
Ohio Gov. John Kasich offered his condolences in a tweet: “Ohio has lost another hero”.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, 26, was shot three times in the attack and had undergone surgery.
The U.S. Navy says that the sailor who was shot earlier this week at a military support center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has died.
Darlene Proxmire, the step-grandmother of Randall Smith, called NewsChannel 15 in Fort Wayne, Saturday morning and said he passed away around 4 a.m. He was originally from Paulding, Ohio. The Navy statement did not give the sailor’s name.
In Paulding High School, Smith had been a star baseball athlete under head coach Joel Parrett. Some of his family lives in Delphos, Kansas, a town just north of Minneapolis.
The college said he attended for a semester in fall 2007.
