Encrypted Messages Stymied Probe of Garland Shooting — FBI Director
In the wake of subsequent attacks in Paris and California, the Obama administration has increased pressure on companies to let law enforcement authorities have “backdoor keys” to encryption systems often used in electronic messaging. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) echoed the call to mandate backdoors in crypto.
“The project is an effort by WND and its dedicated investigative reporting team, private investigators, judicial watchdogs, state officials and attorneys who recognize it’s not enough just to document Clinton crimes, but to bring them to the attention of prosecutors who will bring them to justice before she can even accept the nomination of the Democratic Party for the presidency of the United States”, Corsi said Tuesday.
The latest round of FBI Director James Comey’s War On Encryption came during a Senate Judiciary Commitee hearing this morning.
They follow on comments by Sen. He said that the Armed Services Committee, which he chairs, would hold hearings and “have legislation”.
Comey’s testimony brought a variety of reactions from lawmakers on Wednesday.
“In a 60 Minutes interview, President Obama declared in a response to a question about Secretary Clinton’s use of a private server, ‘I can tell you that this is not a situation in which America’s security was endangered, ‘” Grassley said.
“That’s certainly a hard question for me to answer”, Comey said. But for other types of tools (chat or encryption of data at rest), cryptographers are unanimous-designing their tools in the way that Comey wants will have potentially disastrous effects on user security.
He asserted that conversations with tech companies have, however, been productive.
“Anybody’s view about an investigation they’re not involved in is irrelevant”, he said.
From the fundamentals – like learning the MySQL language- to utilizing today’s top technologies like MongoDB, this bundle is the best thing you can do for your career.
“In May, when two terrorists attempted to kill a whole bunch of people in Garland, Texas, and were stopped by great local law enforcement … that morning before one of those terrorists went to attempt mass murder, he exchanged 109 messages with an overseas terrorist”, Comey said.
Those encrypted messages were exchanged on what’s called the “dark web” and have become a major roadblock for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the agency works to track terrorists. “That is a big problem we have to grapple with it”, said Comey.
“There are lots of folks who have said over the previous year or so we are going to break the internet or we will have unacceptable insecurity if we try and get to a place where court orders are complied with”, Comey said. And they’re working on improving their encryption to fight off the competition. He told the senators that “plenty of companies” provide services online while still maintaining the ability to read their users’ data, and that “plenty” of smartphone manufacturers can unlock encrypted phones.
