Nebraska, Minnesota, San Jose St. taking 5-7 records to bowl

As mentioned in the recap in San Jose’s regular season loss to Boise State, which sealed their fate at 5-7, it was mentioned that even though it wasn’t likely, there would still be a chance that the Spartans can make it to a bowl game with a plethora of bowls in today’s college football. In its second season of operation, Levi’s Stadium is regarded as one of the world’s finest athletic venues and will play host to Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016.

“It’s obviously exciting to get to play in a bowl game”, Riley said.

Nebraska: Huskers struggled in the first season under coach Mike Riley, who moved from Oregon State.

“Clearly, from the get-go, the decision was to stay with the Big Ten”, Cavalli said.

“The bowl practices and additional game will allow us to continue to build as a program”, Riley said.

Because there weren’t enough six-win teams in the country to fill all 80 bowl spots, the NCAA made a decision to use April scores from the 2013-14 school year – the most recent available – as a tiebreaker among five-win teams.

That process drew harsh words from Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson, who will see two teams from his conference play in the same bowl.

Last year’s national champions, Ohio State, will play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

The trip to the Bay Area will be the Huskers’ first-ever appearance in the Foster Farms Bowl, and Nebraska’s seventh all-time bowl trip to California.

Nebraska finished the season 5-7 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play. UCLA rallied to beat BYU 24-23 two weeks after the Cougars stunned Nebraska 33-28 on a Hail Mary.

Tickets for the Foster Farms Bowl go on sale to the public at Huskers.com beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. The team was 1-4 with consecutive defeats to Football Championship Subdivision power Liberty and Sun Belt runner-up Appalachian State.
