Hunger Games finale still No. 1 at box office, Krampus No. 2
It was able to make $16 million for the weekend which was higher than even the upper end of analysts’ predictions. Krampus’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 63%, which is quite good for the horror genre.
The Good Dinosaur is looking like slim pickings compared to previous Pixar outings, and a significant drop in revenue from the week before (an estimated $15.5 million), but a decent worldwide outing is adding up and may prove more boom than bust in the long run.
The weekend box office was solid on a traditionally slow weekend with $96.1 million, up 23% from last year’s anemic $78.2 million.
The star-studded spy thriller-with Daniel Craig as 007, and featuring Italy’s Monica Bellucci and Austrian Oscar victor Christoph Waltz as the villain-has taken in US$176.1 million in its four weeks in North American cinemas, according to estimates.
After grossing $32.4 million this past weekend at the overseas box office, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 has now grossed $524.17 million. Although not the Inside Out-level hit Pixar probably wanted, the film has grossed a domestic total of $75.76 million, which is a healthy amount. Closing the top five list was the 24 Bond film Spectre. Off 58%, the Daniel Craig film has earned $184.5 million in domestic sales and an additional $607 million from foreign markets.
Internationally, the film crossed $100 million as it continues to play strongest in Latin America with good showings in France, Germany and Southeast Asia. Next weekend sees the arrival of Warner’s whale tale In The Heart of the Sea and the nationwide expansion of Universal’s British gangster flick Legend.
Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth starring Michael Caine, Jane Fonda, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz and Paul Dano debuted to an estimated $80,000 from 4 theaters for a location average of $20,000.
Among other awards contenders, Spotlight and Brooklyn stayed in the top 10.
Holiday R-rated comedy The Night Before was steady at #6 in its third week with $4.9 million, down a decent 41%.
