Friendly rival receivers Beckham, Landry to square off
“And just went from there”. Beckham has a knack for making highlight catches, and was doing so during his time at LSU, too.
The Giants and Dolphins both come in with disappointing 5-7 records, although neither is eliminated from postseason contention. “I wouldn’t say it was behind his head, but behind his head basically, ” Landry said. “It’s insane to even really talk about it”.
Landry on Wednesday wanted to keep the details a surprise, saying only: “We’ll get together earlier that day before pregame and we’ll put something together”.
College teammates at LSU, rising National Football League stars and the best of friends, Beckham and Landry will be on opposite sidelines for the first time in their professional careers Monday night when the Dolphins play host to the Giants.
Landry said he and Beckham will not only talk leading up to the game, but that they are rooting for each other to perform well under the prime-time lights.
But it’s a reunion, not a war for dominance.
It was the summer of 2010 and the two teenagers were set to play in a 7-on-7 tournament as part of an All-Star team from their native Louisiana.
“Absolutely, ” Jarvis Landry, Dolphins receiver and member of the very short list of Beckham’s best buds, said Wednesday on a conference call.
Landry and Beckham are known for their one-handed grabs in practice and in warm-ups.
“To me and a couple of other people, we see him do these things all of the time, but on a regular basis”, Landry said.
Beckham was drafted 12th overall by the Giants in 2014, and Landry was taken in the second round the same year by Miami. Landry had been told about Beckham but didn’t realize how good he was until he saw him in person at that camp in Alabama.
“We’re thinking about it”, said Landry. “Me and him will get together that day during pregame and we’ll put something together”.
“I mean he had two one-hand catches back-to-back years against Arkansas, two ridiculous catches, ” Beckham said. “Jarvis came in as the No. 1 receiver”. But Beckham’s best catch isn’t on it, Landry said, because it took place in practice.
Landry continued: “I was trying to get them to rally around me, rally around the passing, the energy”. “I had a copy, but I misplaced it and there’s literally every catch that we’ve ever made”. Only they really know for sure, and the two of them have the kind of relationship where they don’t feel as though they’d have to tell anyone what they’re up to. Down on the field, at least one member of the Dolphins will be hoping to see some Beckham magic.
“They’ll probably be interested in competing against one another”, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, adding: “There’s a definite flair”.
