Sooners release QB Knight from scholarship
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has granted quarterback Trevor Knight a full release to pursue transfer opportunities, according to a SoonerScoop.com report.
Knight, a junior backup who led Oklahoma to a resounding victory over K-State in Manhattan as a freshman, is on track to graduate at the conclusion of semester.
Knight emerged as a possible star with his performance against Alabama in the 2014 Sugar Bowl. Kansas State, Georgia, SMU and OR are among the schools he is looking at transferring to. Under NCAA rules, he can transfer to any school as along as it offers a post-graduate program OU doesn’t not offer.
However, Mayfield, a walk-on transfer from Texas Tech, claimed the starting job and became one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy.
Unfortunately for Knight, he never matched his performance against the Crimson Tide during the rest of his Oklahoma tenure.
It is unclear how much interest K-State would have in Knight, but he could compete for a starting job immediately with the Wildcats.
Were it not for Samaje Perine’s 92-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, the Sooners would have lost the game, as well as their bid to make the College Football Playoff. His last start came in a Russell Athletic Bowl loss to Clemson last December. With Mayfield performing at such a high level and with the Oklahoma offense kicking into high gear as the season progressed, the only action Knight has seen this year was late in games that were already put away in the Sooner win column. That year Knight started in 10 of the Sooners’ 13 games.
