Police surround armed man at Arkansas State University
University spokesman Bill Smith says the man displayed a weapon but no shots have been fired.
At 3:52 p.m., we learned the suspect was taken into custody.
The entire campus had been on lockdown after ASU sent a text alert around 1:30 p.m. warning of an “active shooter” situation.
Earlier in the day, the campus was put on lockdown. “Officers in process of securing vehicle now”, the Jonesboro Police Department said on its Twitter feed, without providing further details.
Authorities in Jonesboro, Arkansas are investigating a report of an active shooter at Arkansas State University.
With the armed man in custody with no shots and fired and no one reported injured, ASU’s campus is apparently safe.
The director for the Jonesboro E911 emergency answering service, Jeff Presley, told KAIT the Arkansas State University suspect was sitting in a truck with a gas can Thursday. Police closed in on the man less than 30 minutes after he arrived on campus.
The incident started when he drove into the center of campus, the school’s report said.
Police visited Bartelt on Wednesday after he made a long Facebook post claiming he was suicidal and homicidal. I am thankful for the rapid response of the University Police officers on duty to contain the suspect to his vehicle and keep him from entering any of the campus buildings.
The town is roughly 130 miles northeast of Little Rock.
Arkansas State has over 13,000 students and Jonesboro suffered its own mass shooting in 1998, when two boys who went to Westside Middle School gunned down four of their fellow students and one of their teachers.
