Mexico defender Corona out of Gold Cup with knee injury
Mexico and Costa Rica were seconds away from advancing to penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup Sunday night, but a controversial penalty decision allowed Mexico to score a game-winning goal at the end of extra time. Mad Costa Rica fans – heavily outnumbered by Mexico fans in the crowd of 74,187 – threw bottles toward the field in protest. Then the goal that finally came might not have been so well-deserved. The PSV Eindhoven star was presented with the opportunity to be the hero, when referee Walter Lopez ruled that Oribe Peralta – as he was trying to latch onto Miguel Layun’s left-sided cross – was fouled by Costa Rica’s Roy Miller in the box.
