HEISMAN PROFILE: McCaffrey does it all for Stanford
As for those who are still in the running, each had at least one moment recently that typified his play and persona, a video bite that likely will get played at some point during Saturday night’s telecast of the Heisman ceremony. Alabama’s Derrick Henry and Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey – the other two finalists for the Doak Walker Award – were invited along with Clemsonquarterback Deshaun Watson to Saturday’s Heisman Trophy presentation. Each candidate has led their respective teams to great seasons. We can laugh about it now.
Another monster of a running back, McCaffery would be the favorite and the third underclassmen in the last four years to win the award if not for Henry’s domination of the conference many feel is the most hard in the nation.
That’s what a lot of people are saying after taking a look at the image the SEC tweeted out this week in an effort to congratulate the running back on winning SEC Offensive Player of the Year. He is simply sensational. Arkansas-which “held” him to 95 yards in Alabam’s 27-14 win-was the only Power 5 team to hold him under the century mark.
Close Heisman voting has been uncommon in recent years. Let’s try this: Derrick Henry is a beastly freak of nature.
Henry made one cut behind the line and sprinted toward the end zone while Auburn defenders seemed to be moving in slow motion. When you consider Henry rushed for 1,321 yards and 13 touchdowns in his final seven games, well, that’s a heck of a closing statement. “I don’t know exactly how tall he is, but I know he’s big”. “I just found out five minutes ago, got a little bit emotional”. The man is an absolute animal.
Keep it here on Bama Hammer for all of your Alabama Crimson Tide news. One of his most underrated qualities is his patience, his work ethic, and his calm demeanor.
To say that Christian McCaffrey is not deserving of a Heisman Trophy would be an inaccurate statement.
But Christian followed in the path of his parents – including Ed McCaffrey, an National Football League wide receiver from 1991-2003 – and chose to compete for Stanford, where he will try to be the Cardinal’s first Heisman victor since Jim Plunkett in 1970. He is Mr. Everything for Stanford. He even threw an 11-yard TD pass. For the season, McCaffery totaled 3,496 all-purpose yards (1,000 more than anyone else this season) to break Sanders’ record of 3,250. He’s scored 15 touchdowns this year, which includes throwing two as well.
McCaffrey won the Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player on Wednesday. He is very quick and shifty.
Still, even including Sanders’ bowl game, McCaffrey only needs 30 all-purpose yards to top what Sanders’ record ought to be. That is the new single season record for the SEC. “I think it should be his”. It’s just a shame his team is not in the playoff, but Stanford is really good, and McCaffrey is their best player.
The first-team running backs on USA Today’s All-America team, which was unveiled Tuesday, are Henry and McCaffrey.
“The major question is what’s going to happen in the Midwest, the Southwest and the Northeast, ” said Cory McCartney, who covered the Heisman race for Sports Illustrated and now does the same for Fox Sports.
