Armed man arrested at Arkansas State University; no shots
He had a shotgun strapped to his back but failed to make any notable actions since police surrounded him within 30 minutes, according to the Jonesboro Sun.
At one point, Elliott said, the man poured gasoline on his own truck.
No one was injured in the incident and no shots were fired, according to an Arkansas State University press release.
University spokesman Bill Smith said the man was taken into custody about an hour after the incident began.
Police visited Bartelt on Wednesday after he made a long Facebook post claiming he was suicidal and homicidal. No shots have been fired, no reported injuries.
The University Police Department issued the text alert about the situation at 1:36 p.m.
Police spokesman Paul Holmes confirmed the incident, saying that a negotiator was headed to the scene to speak with the man. “Our tactical people are getting themselves in a position to respond as well”, he said.
“Report of an active shooter spotted at the student union”, the university wrote on Twitter.
Jordan Sheets, 20, of Carlisle, a campus sophomore, said he was in the student union when the pickup drove onto the lawn in front of the building.
Elliott said investigators were still interviewing Bartelt to learn more about his reasons and he would be screened by mental health professionals.
Taylor Davidson, a campus sophomore from Jonesboro, said he was in the student union when the gunman drove up. “I’m also very thankful for the outside agencies’ quick response and to further contain the situation to prevent any injuries or loss of life”, Martin said.
