Chelsea can go 10 in a row without losing – Mourinho
Eden Hazard insisted that he was pleased with a “good” result after helping Chelsea earn a point against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Whilst Hazard was performing better than he has all season, one of Chelsea’s other top stars, Diego Costa was dropped to the bench for the game and his reactions sitting on the sidelines didn’t make for a pretty picture as the striker appeared visibly displeased with his manager’s decision.
Yet despite his side’s successful shut out, Mourinho claimed afterwards that it was Spurs who “deserved even more credit” with the clean sheet as Chelsea “were the more risky team and had the better chances”.
“It’s a good thing that, maybe, we are a bigger club than Chelsea or that we deserve more”.
Asked if he was happy with a draw, in light of the journey to Baku, he said: “No, not really happy. The team defended like a team… against a team that presses really well and aggressively”.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will climb to sixth if they win at home to Swansea, whose manager Garry Monk is in the spotlight after a return of one win in nine league games.
Chelsea have now gone five successive PL away matches without a win (L3 D2), their worst run on the road in the competition since March 2013. I think we have the team again and we look to the future with a better spirit.
Mourinho said prior to the game that he left out Costa due to low confidence after just four goals this season, but the pair argued at half-time of last Tuesday’s Champions League clash in Israel and the manager on Friday criticised the striker’s reading of the game.
It clearly angered Costa, who did not take part in the pre-match warm-up and tossed his bib toward Mourinho as the game neared its conclusion at White Hart Lane. “I have a good relationship with him, no problems”, Mourinho said after the 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane.
“No, no I don’t think it was fair”. “They did not do much to win the game”. If we had won 1-0 or 2-0 people would say the performance was tremendous. “We know it’s hard”.
“He was a warrior a year ago and Chelsea’s talisman”.
Spurs went close soon after when Heung-Min Son diverted Harry Kane’s cross straight into the arms of a grateful Asmir Begovic.
For Tottenham, unbeaten in the league since the season’s opening day, Ryan Mason came in for suspended central midfielder Dele Alli.
“Maybe we lacked a bit of freshness at end to create some extra chances”, Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen said.
