Carol, Spotlight lead Golden Globes nominations
Timothy Gray, awards editor at industry magazine Variety, said the nominations reflected the cross-section of films in the running for this year’s prizes.
Close behind was Adam McKay’s finance comedy “The Big Short” with four nominations, including best picture – comedy, and acting nominations for Steve Carell and Christian Bale.
“The Big Short” is coming out on December 23.
And Spotlight was perhaps too much of an ensemble piece for the Globes. Turns out the Globes weren’t down to acknowledge them as only supporting roles, so those ladies were nominated in the best actress category instead. “Originals are really an important way to define a brand and are one of the best ways we can express and represent who we want to be as a service”.
It remains to be seen if an Academy Awards heavyweight will be anywhere to be found at the January 10 Beverly Hills, Calif., ceremony. Could it be that the Spielberg-Tom Hanks magic is wearing off? His rivals include Bryan Cranston for “Rrumbo”, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Will Smith for “Concussion”.
Blanchett and Mara will be up against Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale Brooklyn and Alicia Vikander for transgender movie The Danish Girl in the best actress race. But true to its, shall we say, idiosyncratic reputation, the HFPA also prompted widespread headscratching by recognizing a number of shows that, while generally well-received, were not considered awards contenders. However, voters gave his spot to Al Pacino in the Bleecker Street comedy “Danny Collins”. Broadcast networks were completely shut out.
It is the first time that Netflix has earned the most nominations and the first time in a decade HBO hasn’t. Hulu has ordered a second season.
Some of this is not the Globes’ fault – it’s just a deep year for dramas.
Why even have categories in the first place?
Others also landed multiple nods.
Mad Max: Fury Road, aside from its best drama nomination, also earned a nod for director George Miller – his first Globe nomination ever.
On Thursday, the streaming TV website picked up a best TV comedy nomination for its original series “Casual”.
Act up. One of the actors snubbed for “Spotlight”, Ruffalo, did get a nomination – for “Infinitely Polar Bear”. However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association somehow liked it enough to nominate Ruffalo in this film, perhaps to make up not finding room in the best supporting actor category for his performance in “Spotlight”. ABC fared the best of the lot, picking up four nominations in total, with most of those going to its high-minded anthology series “American Crime”. Streaming pioneer Netflix led the overall television nominations with eight nods, including two each for drug cartel drama “Narcos” and “Orange is the New Black”, a comedy set in a women’s prison. But the surprisingly robust showing at the Globes on Thursday morning doesn’t hurt.
“The big made-for-Oscars studio contenders are falling out”, I’Neil stated, citing Focus Features’ “The Danish Girl”, Universal Pictures’ “Steve Jobs” and Disney’s Tom Hanks film “Bridge of Spies”.
Indeed, it was the Big Three’s oddball cousins, FOX and the CW, that ended up making the biggest splash-the former with nominations for “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson and Jamie Lee Curtis, in Ryan Murphy’s kooky horror comedy “Scream Queens”, and the latter with two Comedy Actress nominations, for Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, an hourlong sitcom musical) and defending champion Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”, a comic telenovela).
Penny Dreadful’s Eva Green finally earned some recognition!
