Man arrested on campus armed with shotgun
Arkansas State University went on lockdown on Thursday afternoon after a person with a gun was seen at the student union building.
A Facebook profile believed to belong to Bartelt states that he studied graphic design at ASU. One person on the scene says there is a propane tank in the truck, but they do not yet know why.
The sophomores said they talked to Bartelt because he was making doughnuts with his pickup truck and they thought it was a student being amusing.
Bartelt posted what may have been a suicide note on his Facebook page Wednesday.
The university’s provost said all remaining exams Thursday have been postponed to Wednesday, December 16.
“As a precautionary measure, we will increase the number of patrols on campus this week but there is no continuing danger”, Martin said. At one point, he sloshed gasoline on his truck.
JONESBORO (AP) – Arkansas State University says an armed man who drove onto campus is now in custody.
Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott said Bartelt had a shotgun pointed at his own head.
A green pickup parked on grass was believed to be related to the incident.
About five minute later, after finishing his test, Miller said “people came running and screaming freaking out”. All of campus has since been cleared, but the campus remains closed for the rest of the day.
The university began advising students of the danger on campus via tweets and text alerts at the outset of the incident.
Jonesboro is also home to Westside Middle School, where an 11-year-old and 13-year-old fatally shot four students and a teacher in 1998.
ASU is located about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock.
