Yahoo’s latest app is a TV guide for the streaming age
Yahoo created its own version of a TV Guide today that will let users find where movies and TV shows are streaming across their subscription services.
The Yahoo Video Guide app seems to be just the right solution, it is not a streaming service of its own but bundles everything that is available out there.
When you first open up the app, it’ll scan your phone for streaming video apps (like Netflix, Amazon Video, HBO Go, ABC, Fox, etc), and then build out a list of recommendations for stuff to watch based on the apps you have installed (you can always add in more services manually if you want).
Outside of the big-name streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, HBO and Hulu, Yahoo Video Guide also supports services like Showtime, YouTube, and dozens of TV networks. It will provide with suitable options based on a user’s preferences, once a user selects what they like, the Yahoo Guide App will bring up the streaming services that house that particular movie or TV show.
Yahoo Video Guide also features a Mood Picker feature that will recommend titles for you to watch.
For those who don’t have cable service piggybacked onto their Internet plan (me!), Yahoo’s latest app will come in handy. For example, clicking a GIF with two people kissing will direct you to romantic comedies, clicking on a fire gives you an array of action movies, and so on. Many users pronounced Yahoo’s video interface difficult to navigate, making it hard to find expensive shows such as “Community” or discover its high quality originals including Paul Feig’s “Other Space”.
On each title’s page, you can see how much it costs when available to rent or buy, as well as where you can stream it for free. Other useful features include Rotten Tomatoes ratings, a short blurb for each title, year of release, and cast and filmmaker details.
The app can be downloaded on Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, and users may access it without the need for a Yahoo ID.
“This is an exciting step for us as we move towards a day when we all watch TV and movies exclusively from our mobile phones, iPads and connected TVs”, said Yahoo.
