Business As Usual — The Golden Globes
The Globes nominations were announced a day after the Screen Actors Guild award contenders.
The inclusion of The Martian in the comedy/musical division was a source of controversy to start with.
Here are the 23 biggest snubs and surprises.
Some Globe nominees woke to find themselves with more than they expected.
Can someone please explain how Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom managed to score a place in this year’s Best Actress in a Comedy race over the uber-talented Alison Janney? Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”) and Will Smith (“Concussion”) all made the cut for the January 10 dinner that tends to pack in as many A-list celebrities as possible. Until now, it was getting tons of attention at smaller award shows.
Brie Larson – Nominee for Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama “Room”: “Wow”.
Globes’ defiance: In a year that has seen studios dubiously advocating that lead roles (including Vikander in “The Danish Girl”, Rooney Mara in “Carol”) be shoehorned into supporting categories, the Globes mostly did the right thing and positioned the performances correctly.
However, there’s no real reason that such a film can’t be regarded as a comedy, Clarisse Loughrey, of the British newspaper The Independent, noted today.
Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” also got left out in the cold. The film was also nominated for best screenplay and the movie’s director, Tom McCarthy, received a nod. “It’ll help the movie get out there, ‘” said Adam McKay, director of “The Big Short”. However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association somehow liked it enough to nominate Ruffalo in this film, perhaps to make up not finding room in the best supporting actor category for his performance in “Spotlight”.
Best Supporting Actor puzzler: No one gets in for “Spotlight” but Idris Elba gets in for a good but not nomination-worthy turn in the unfortunately generic “Beasts of No Nation”.
Outlander itself, based on the hugely successful books by Diana Gabaldon which mix historical fiction with romance and time travel, has been shortlisted for Best TV Series or Drama, alongside Empire, Game of Thrones, Mr Robot and Narcos.
David O. Russell, director of best comedy movie nominee “Joy”: “I am grateful to the HFPA for recognising “Joy” and the picture’s leading light, Jennifer (Lawrence), who has taken new risks, across the lifespan story of this picture that can spread inspiration to everyone who has a dream that might have been forgotten”.
The 50-year-old actress and previous Emmy nominee was nominated for her first Golden Globe, for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited-Series or TV Movie for her role as Helen Solloway, a woman whose husband cheated on her, on Showtime’s The Affair. Stars Christian Bale and Steve Carell both picked up best actor nominations for the comedy about the financial collapse. “The best picture nomination really speaks to that”. Interestingly, sci-fi film The Martian somehow managed to grab a nomination for Best Motion Picture, Comedy, and Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Comedy for Matt Damon – now that’s range.
In the best animated film category, the Charlie Kaufman-scripted, stop-motion animated “Anomalisa” slotted in alongside a quartet of more family-friendly releases: “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
The Globe also give out honors for television. Just two years ago, four of its five TV comedy nominees were on network.
Lady Gaga, best limited TV series actress nominee for “American Horror Story: Hotel”: “I am too excited for words at this recognition for my work!” She tweeted that she probably woke her Manhattan neighbors.
This was Schumer’s show and she’d be a Golden Globe nominee with or without James.
Denzel Washington will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for making an “incredible impact on the world of entertainment”. So far “Spotlight”, with wins by some major critics groups, is the film to beat.
The Globes’ tweets have since been deleted.
The Globes ceremony will be hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais.
