Arkansas State University: Armed man on campus
The suspect was identified as Brad Bartelt, 47, a former student at a separate campus of Arkansas State, the university’s police chief said, adding that a motive was not yet known.
No one was injured in the incident and no shots were fired, according to an Arkansas State University press release.
“He was threatening himself”, Elliott said.
Bartelt will face criminal charges, Elliot said, as well as a mental health exam. He had been a student previously at ASU’s Newport campus. The university instructed people at the student union to evacuate.
He also said that a negotiator was sent to talk to the man, though it’s unclear what discussions, if any, had taken place, reported the New York Post.
Hear an interview with KASU reporter Johnathan Reaves aired at 3:44 p.m. The lockdown was then lifted except for an area immediately around the truck, which was near the student union building. A Jonesboro Police Department spokesperson said officers visited his home Wednesday after he posted what appeared to be a suicidal note on Facebook, the New York Daily News reported.
A man who authorities said was growing marijuana in a Volusia County storage unit panicked when he heard a police helicopter hovering nearby and called 911 to surrender. Officers negotiated with him, the bomb squad was called in, as well as the SWAT team.
We have a great working relationship with the Jonesboro Police Department, and we have asked them to assist us by leading the investigation of this incident.
Campus was closed Thursday following the incident.
Back in 1998, an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old opened fire at Jonesboro’s Westside Middle School, killing a teacher and four students.
“I looked up and tapped Reed and he looked at me and said we have to do something”, Sheets said.
