Ex-Oklahoma City Cop Daniel Holtzclaw Found Guilty Of Serial Rape
The jury began deliberating Monday evening in the sexual assault case after hearing testimony from more than 40 witnesses. He will be sentenced January 21.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, painted Holtzclaw as a dishonest cop who violated his oath to protect the public and instead used his power to “prey on women” who lived in the northeast side of Oklahoma City. At least one accuser was present, as well as several black community leaders. Seven armed deputies were stationed around the room.
Holtzclaw’s mother, father and sister were in the courtroom as the verdict was read.
“We’re going to ask the judge to make sure that this defendant never sees the light of day”, District Attorney David Prater said. “In those counts where the not guilty verdicts came back, they determined that we didn’t prove those cases beyond a reasonable doubt”. She didn’t report the crime because she didn’t think anyone would believe her. “I feel like all police will work together and I was scared”. Many have expressed their frustration that it has not attracted the same media attention as the shooting of Ferguson teenager Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson or the chokehold death of Eric Garner by NY police officer Daniel Pantaleo. Six of the women accused Holtzclaw of rape, and he was found guilty on four of those charges.
He would expose himself to the women, grope them, force them to have oral sex, and rape them. He attacked the 17-year-old victim on her mother’s porch. He then stood over her and ordered her to perform oral sex.
One woman testified while wearing orange scrubs and handcuffs because she had been jailed hours earlier.
Prosecutors alleged that Holtzclaw inappropriately touched the girl while driving her to her mother’s house. Holtzclaw is described in official documents as “Asian or Pacific Islander”, according to News OK; all of the victims in the case are black.
One factor stands out, however – victims tend to be among society’s most vulnerable: juveniles, drug addicts, and women in custody or with a criminal history.
During the trial Holtzclaw’s defense attorney, Scott Adams, questioned the accusers’ credibility and whether they were high on drugs when they encountered the officer.
Ultimately, that approach did not sway the jury to dismiss the women’s stories.
But the jurors heard from 13 women, who said he had sexually victimised them.
Another woman testified that Holtzclaw drove her to an abandoned, trash-filled stretch of an impoverished Oklahoma City neighborhood in the shadow of the state Capitol.
Her DNA was found on Holtzclaw’s trousers.
The case has a crucial racial aspect to it. Holtzclaw is white, his victims are black, and the jury in the case was all white. The jury was made up of eight men and four women, all of whom appeared to be white.
