Armed man on campus
University officials and police said Brad Kenneth Bartelt was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and containers of gasoline and propane when he was taken into custody on the Arkansas State University campus Thursday, the Associated Press reported.
Bartelt will face criminal charges, Elliot said, as well as a mental health exam. He had been a student previously at ASU’s Newport campus.
“Man in custody at ASU”.
We have a great working relationship with the Jonesboro Police Department, and we have asked them to assist us by leading the investigation of this incident. A large American flag flew on a pole in the bed of the truck. The pickup is seen stopped near a walkway and by a paved area with tables and benches.
Brad Kenneth Bartelt was being held Friday on a preliminary charge of aggravated assault for the Thursday incident, in which students and staff were ordered to evacuate the student union.
Alerts sounded Thursday afternoon of a man with a gun on the front lawn of the Student Union. However, Fox News reports that the Jonesboro Police indicated that they received a call on Wednesday regarding a Facebook post by the suspect in which he wrote that he was not only homicidal, but suicidal, while referring to a particular incident with the Social Security Administration.
The individual with a weapon has been surrounded by police.
Bartelt reportedly threatened to harm himself and did not threaten to harm students or police officers. No gunshots were reported and no one was injured, police said. At no time did he point his weapon at officers.
The chief said that, when he arrived, Bartelt was sitting in the truck with his foot out the window and the shotgun visible, yelling something inaudible.
“He was looking in the bed of his truck, we got a ways away and called police”, said McPherson.
JPD crisis negotiators talked with Bartelt and convinced him to surrender without injuring the officers or himself.
Bartelt told police that he was taking “several psychiatric [medications]” such as Hydrocodone and Xanax.
