Cate Blanchett & George Miller lead at the 73rd Golden Globes 2015

The Golden Globes nominations were announced Thursday morning and – in what’s becoming the norm this awards season – only confused the race. It picked up nods for best drama, actress Brie Larson and its screenplay.

The Hollywood Foreign Press has released the highly-anticipated list of nominees for the 2016 Golden Globe awards, and it’s made one thing abundantly clear: streaming services are here to stay as serious contenders in the new world of television.

“Veep” earned nomination in the best television series? musical or comedy, and the best actress category for Julia Louis-Dreyfus. It got four Golden Globes nominations, including one for the film’s star, Leonardo DiCaprio.

However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association somehow liked it enough to nominate Ruffalo in this film, perhaps to make up not finding room in the best supporting actor category for his performance in “Spotlight“.

Best animated feature nominations went to “Anomalisa”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “Inside Out”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep”.

The nominees for best supporting actor are Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Sylvester Stallone (Creed), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Paul Dano (Love and Mercy), and Michael Shannon (99 Homes). The others in the category were Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl“) and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”). Alicia Vikander will compete for both best actress, drama, for “The Danish Girl“, as well as her supporting role as an artificial intelligence in “Ex Machina”. Meanwhile, “Martian” hero Matt Damon is vying for best actor alongside Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Al Pacino, and Mark Ruffalo.

“The Big Short“, which takes a quirky look at the housing bubble crash that led to the 2008 recession, will contend for best comedy/musical film alongside space adventure “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, inspired by the story of the Miracle Mop creator.

SNUB: “Better Call Saul” Oddly, the Emmys’ only freshman nominee – AMC’s “Better Call Saul” – was also left out by HFPA (although star Bob Odenkirk landed a nom).

The nominees for best TV drama are Empire, Game of Thrones, Mr. Robot, Narcos, and Outlander.
