Chipotle CEO Apologizes and Vows to ‘Be Safest Place to Eat’
The findings appear separate from a spate of E. coli infections in recent months that has sickened 52 people in nine states and forced the company to temporarily close some locations. Therefore, experts fear that Chipotle can face red mark even if all the setbacks are temporary. That can lead to ingredient shortages and questions about food safety.
This is really great news for people who eat at Chipotle. Chipotle had been using whole tomatoes washed and cut inside individual restaurants, but those are now being done in a commissary where they are washed, cut and packaged before they are sent to the restaurants. “I have to say I’m sorry for the people that got sick”.
“We know from food safety research and from food production in this country that there are a lot of vulnerable areas where food contamination could occur”, she said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it has not pinpointed the cause of the E. coli, and that it could take another month before it considers closing the case.
“When we re-open, the [Boston] restaurant will be completely sanitized, and every single employee will have been tested and assured that they do not have norovirus”, Ells said.
Chipotle shares notice a 5% jump on Thursday soon after the founder apologized to its customers who became sick after eating at the restaurant. Those symptoms include: nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and muscle pain.
“Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause inflammation of the stomach and large intestine lining (gastroenteritis); they are the leading cause of gastroenteritis in the U.S …” They are highly contagious. But now, the trend is changing as now customers have been asking for good-quality food but do not want to pay much.
But as the company has grown, it’s faced limitations. Then this year, it pulled pork from the menus at roughly a third of its restaurants after one of its suppliers violated its standards.
But others think Chipotle will be able to bounce back from this.
Ells said the E. coli outbreak has pushed the company into reviewing how the 64 ingredients used in its restaurants are handled, and to look into new ways of assuring food is safe.
“It was clear that Chipotle, who preaches the concept of “food with integrity” and hygienic food, can not go wrong in their own game”, said the note.
The string of health concerns related to food-borne illnesses juxtaposes the image presented by the fast-food chain earlier this year. “Many companies are starting to do it, but the reluctance is real and it’s problematic – and that’s getting in the way of food safety”.
Eight Boston College basketball players missed a game Sunday due to food poisoning, leading many to suspect E.coli, including BC Coaches. “But that’s just not the case”.
